About
The California Institute for Hazards Research is founded upon the idea that natural hazards need not become natural disasters if they are addressed proactively and effectively, rather than reactively.
Through research and education, the California Institute for Hazards Research will provide the best available knowledge, tools, information, and future workforce to make California a national leader in hazard forecasting, planning, and management for disaster reduction.
Scope
The institute will concern itself with all types of natural hazards that could beset California, including Droughts, Earthquakes, Epidemics, Fires, Floods, Landslides, Severe Storms, Tsunamis, Wildfires, and Volcanic Eruptions.
Focus
We will focus on forecasting, risk assessment, mitigation, public health and safety, emergency management and response, economic impacts, and disaster recovery.
Methods
To these ends, the institute will:
Develop and sustain partnerships between researchers, prioritizing joint and interdisciplinary research
Collaborate and coordinate with state, federal, and international organizations
Improve public understanding
Inform policy- and decision-makers in California
Centralize hazards and response information
Train the next generation of natural hazards scientists, engineers, and policy makers
Set priorities and direction for collaborative efforts
